Prism Design Lab joined the Marian Cheek Jackson Center Sankofa Freedom School to facilitate workshops for the design of a Gateway to honor the Black builders of Chapel Hill/Carrboro, NC. Sankofa Freedom School engages local high school students in a summer program that focuses on local history, social justice, and identity.
Prism facilitated several activities for the students to learn about existing architecture and to practice design thinking. The students then generated ideas and sketched out a site plan for the Builders Gateway design. Using modeling clay, chipboard, and markers they built a 3D model of their concepts. The presentation of their models led to many insightful and meaningful discussions between the group as a whole. The students have not only learned more about the tools and process of design, but also got to participate in community-led design.
